Students experience first-hand the challenges South Africa faces in creating a new nation following the depredations of apartheid and colonialism, as you explore the country’s varied geographical expressions, from traditional subsistence agriculture to modern First World cities and their peripheral shantytowns. Cities and towns visited include Johannesburg, Kimberley, East London, King William’s Town, and Grahamstown, followed by 13 days in Cape Town and two days in Pretoria. During this intensive four-week journey, students come to appreciate the extraordinary will and energy that has been and must continue to be expended to create a new South African nation, as they also develop an awareness of the many similarities between American and South African history, politics, and society.
